WHAT TO DO WHEN ONE HAS AN ABNORMAL VAGINAL ODOUR.
Like I mentioned in earlier post, abnormal vaginal odour can be caused by both infective and non-infective agents. Prompt identification of the cause is required for early treatment. Anyways, since the infective causes are much more annoying and problematic, we will focus on them.
Usually, most offensive vaginal odours often present with abnormal discharge or itching as well. So, very often, one may be required to consider all the signs and symptoms as a manifestation of whatever infection is causing the offensive odour in the first place.
Anyways, except you are sure of what it is you are dealing with and you know how to go about it, below is how you should approach any suspected abnormal vaginal odour .
1. DON'T SELF-MEDICATE: This is where a number of women miss it. They go about treating what they don't even know. This is wrong and may even compound things for you, so don't do it. I often see women taking antibiotics for yeast infection! Do you know antibiotics worsen yeast infection? But because you don't know the differences between fungal and bacterial infections, any infection that confronts you must get treated with antibiotics, right?
2. DISCUSS YOUR SYMPTOMS WITH A DOCTOR: Instead of self-medicating, get the opinion of a doctor regarding your symptoms. I know some women find it very embarrassing opening up on issues like this, it is in your best interest to quickly discuss your symptoms with your doctor. Usually, the doctor will advise you, based on his assessment of you, on what tests to do to confirm his suspicion.
A very common test usually done is the High Vaginal Swab (HVS). The test will involve the use of a special instrument to collect assumes from your vagina which will be taken to lab and cultured to grow the offending agent.
3. GET THE FULL COURSE OF TREATMENT: Don't take the prescribed medication for 3 only instead of 7 days after you notice some improvement. Make sure you complete the dose or doses of prescribed medications. If you stop halfway without completing the medications, you stand a high risk of suffering a recurrence.
